But, there is one thing I haven't shared with you. The love of the most important man in my life:
That's right. I LOVE Billy Joel. If there is a concert within 300 miles of my house, I am there. I own a rare, first edition, autographed 52nd street Album that cost morethanapaycheck. I LOVE Billy Joel. He is absolutely, truly, my one and only favorite singer in the entire world. Going to a Billy Joel concert brings such a smile of glee and giddiness to my face, I can't even explain it. My husband won't even attend a concert with me anymore because the display of my love for him is just utter ridiculousness. Just the mention of his name sends my heart fluttering, and I just melt. I love him, and every song he has ever written. If Billy Joel wasn't married, Nick wouldn't have stood a chance. So, what does that have to do with this recipe? Well, I was driving home the other night, and Piano Man came on the radio. A Billy classic! As I was singing along, for some reason, the line "they're sharing a drink they call loneliness" suddenly resonated with me. What a poignant line. Suddenly, it made me wonder - what would loneliness taste like? Do you ever wonder these things on your drive home? Maybe it's only me.
Anyway, I created this drink based off of that line. It has a smoky, deep-yet-empty feeling that the line of that song makes me think of. I can sort of imagine business men sitting around after work, smoking their cigars and talking about unimportant things over a drink like this. But, as grim and desolate as that description sounds, it's actually a delicious, mellow drink. The smokiness of the fresh leaf tobacco adds just a hint of "tension" to the drink that is otherwise incredibly sweet with the intense bourbon flavor. I encourage you to try it. Let me know what you think!!
(per drink)
1 shot Basil Hayden's Bourbon
1 shot Wild Turkey American Honey Bourbon
lemon juice of 1/4 lemon
dash of bitters
3 large basil leaves
1/2 tsp loose leave tobacco
black cherry soda to top
Directions:
Combine first 6 ingredients in a martini shaker, muddle slightly, let sit 30 minutes
shake ingredients vigorously
strain into a highball glass filled with ice
top with black cherry soda
serve, garnished with a lemon twist and a basil leaf

You are one creative chick I must say, impressive!
Heather, this make me sad...
I just imagine one of my friend who live alone, I got to call him tomorrow. Thanks Heather!
Cheers,
Elra
I love Billy Joel too, I have a friend who looks just like him. The drink looks pretty and sounds tasty.
Aww that was really nice to read -- you're pretty poignant yourself, Ms Heather! Love Piano Man! :)
I'll bet this is "better than drinking alone..." :)
You are so creative!
It does indeed sound lonely. I have the same feelings for Leonard Cohen - no stranger to lonliness himself.
ps, no google link error messages today! Must have been a friday the 13th thing..
I quote Billy Joel often - "Well now you tell me you love somebody
And you'll love 'em forever, you may love 'em forever,
But you won't like 'em all of the time." contains one of the great truths of the universe.
And your cocktail sounds fantastic.
I couldn't choose a favorite Billy Joel song, but Piano Man is definitely on the list. I was a waitress/bartender for many years so I could support myself while attending school full time....and yet every shift I would have at least one or two offensively pedantic customers who would make comments like, "oh, don't make jokes like that to the waitress, she won't understand." or, "Oh! I see you're reading A BOOK! Good for you!!!" Kiss my arse.
Anyway, needless to say - my favorite line was "and the waitress is practicing politics, as the businessmen slowly get stoned...."
I call that passion! Love that you were so inspired by a song to make a drink - awesome!
Bourbon and bitters! It totally connotes loneliness. And sounds delicious! I even have a bottle of Basil Hayden in the liquor cabinet.
So creative! Love it. Billy is my favorite singer ever! I have only been to 1 of his concerts but it was clearly the best concert of my life. My friend Kelley was actually brought to tears over how good the concert was! Happy Valentine's day ;)
You really should get a second job as a mixologist. I love Billy Joel...maybe with not the same passion as you, but he is great :)
"Bottle of red, bottle of white..." Yep, Billy Joel is pretty much tops.
Awesome post and what an incredibly creative recipe. I really love your blog.
Finally! I couldn't get to your blog yesterday or earlier today, darn google!!!! I love how you got your idea for this, Billy would be proud!!
This is awesome! I'm going to show my husband - the resident "beverage specialist" of the house. I'm sure he'll love it!. It has a sad connotation but I like to think that your description of it as mellow is more appropriate. Sometimes, what others consider as 'loneliness' is just a quiet moment taken for yourself!.
Ahhh, my love for Keith Urban is like your's for Billy. I could totally kick Nicole's butt! Um, I have no bourbon-but I have bitters!
When I first read the title I was all concerned! :) I'm glad to know it's all for the love of a song.
Heather,
I have to say that is one of the most unique drinks that I have ever heard of!! How did you come up with that?? I am very impressed and would like to order one...
good ol' billy joel. leave it to him to inspire a tasty beverage, and you're right--that's a great line.
Billy Joel's songs are beautiful... Watched on TV, he was on Oprah show a few months ago :)
Mick Jagger is my star-crush. I've never made a drink honoring one of his songs, but now I feel like I should!
Billy Joel is amazing!! The drink looks amazing as well!
Stupendous drink. I must try. Right up my alley. George Clooney is on my mind. LOVE the drink!!
I love how you came up with this drink! That's so unique. I think you nailed it. It sounds fantasic. I need to try that bourbon.
That's funny how much you love Billy Joel. I feel the same way about the Beatles. Don't hate me, but, I'm not that familiar with Billy Joel!
What an interesting cocktail! I love me some Wild Turkey. Living in KY converted me to a bourbon girl!
An award for you, please collect it here :)
Seems like you hit the nail on the perfect loneliness drink, mine would be much more metaphorical. Enjoy Billy Joel!!!
That is one lonely sounding drink. I am definitely going to have to give that a try. Any reason I can't swap out Maker's Mark (just because that's what we have). Oh, and you know that I like Billy, too!
I love the idea of tobacco in a bourbon drink. The buzz of nicotine without the second hand smoke.
I am so ready for a cocktail right now to warm my bones up. It can be hot or cold drink...I'm easy!
